TalkTalk, the takeover of Tiscali and the mystery of the missing megabits

I was never sure it was a good move switching from BT to Tiscali. It was a move based on price and nothing else, and I knew that Tiscali’s support service was pretty bad.
But we could save over £100 a year, so it seemed like a good trade off.
Switching to Tiscali was easy, just supply them the MAC code, and a few days later we were up and running after changing the username and password on the router.
Life with Tiscali was fine, only once did I have to call their tech support, and although it was not a good experience, such as having to dig out and switch to their supplied router instead of my D-Link, the problem was fairly quickly resolved (once they had reset the password for the account at their end).
Recently Tiscali were taken over by TalkTalk (well back last year), and the switch went smoothly, apart from we were paying about £2 more per month. In the letter was the option to take out a new contract, which we ignored.
Now, like a number of people, we are suffering from appaling broadband speeds.
Check out some of the comments here. and in the link above. It’s a long list of price hikes, usage capping, and disconnections.
At the moment my speeds are fucking ridiculous.
So after disconnecting and reconnecting to the ISP, being told it would be resolved within 24 hours, speeds are still akin to dial-up.
We have requested our MAC code and are switching to Sky’s broadband, and taking the opportunity to get Sky HD as well.
So fuck off Tiscali/Talk Talk. You are going to lose a lot of customers through your bad business practice of changing peoples charges for broadband without giving them an option, and the dismal speeds. TalkTalk are saying that OpenReach are investigating. uSwitch may have named them the ISP with the most improved customer service, but then again you can polish a turd, but its still a turd.
As for their claims of “fast reliable broadband”, well, it’s all just talk.
